review4_2 Perhaps the fourth time is the charm for Telltale. They have been working away at their Tales of Monkey Island series for a while now, and with each game they become a bit more comfortable with the franchise and its characters. The fourth installment sees Guybrush and company head back to Flotsam Island. Morgan le Fley has, against her better judgment, turned Guybrush in to the Marquis de Singe. He is to be tried, and if found guilty, put to death.

to1 Building cities in games like SimCity is always an outrageously tense exercise in tightrope walking. Every second, your city could burst into flames, lose its power, plummet into debt, or succumb to crime. These were not even the game’s special events: they were just your average reasons for city failure. Tropic 3 is just such a game, but it sells the life-and-death nature of its gameplay much better.

51ys2QotggL._SL500_ Here is a little game show history that, chances are, nobody cares about. The Price is Right first began in the early fifties. It was hosted by game show legend Bill Cullen, and was one of his better known hosting gigs. The format probably sounds familiar: A prize is shown on stage, and contestants take turns guessing how much the actual retail price of the prize is without going over. Whoever was closest would win the prize. The show was on NBC for a little while, and then moved onto ABC before getting the axe.

bl1 “Let’s mosh it up!” So begins Brütal Legend, the much-anticipated new game from Tim Schafer, the brain behind adventure classics such as Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango, and the critically-lauded but commercially-ignored Psychonauts. Of course, I never played any of those games, so I have to take the Internet’s word that they’re all well worth the mounds of praise heaped upon them. This latest release from Schafer’s Doublefine Productions is a far cry from the point-and-click adventure games of yore. A hybrid of open world adventure, gore-spattered hack n’ slash action, and real-time strategy, Brütal Legend is truly a unique experience.

bl1 Gearbox’s Borderlands arrives in a cloud of dust, post-apocalyptic trappings, and an extreme attitude. Borderlands is an RPG by way of a very carefully designed FPS. You could call it a “Roll Playing Shooter,” if you were so inclined, but its heart lies with the shooting, and never the roll playing.
